About Nigeria

A brief introduction to the country hosting ISC 2028, for delegates travelling to Abuja.

A leading agricultural nation

Nigeria is one of Africa’s leading agricultural nations, with diverse climatic zones and fertile land supporting a wide range of farming. Agriculture remains vital to the economy, providing employment and contributing significantly to food security and rural development.

The country has a growing livestock industry, with increasing adoption of modern feeding practices, forage production and silage technologies to improve animal nutrition and productivity. Research institutions, universities and industry stakeholders continue to drive innovation in sustainable farming systems.

With a large population, expanding agricultural markets and a strong commitment to agricultural advancement, Nigeria offers fertile ground for knowledge exchange and international collaboration — and its cultural heritage, vibrant cities and warm hospitality make it a welcoming destination for delegates.

Our culture

People and heritage

Nigeria is home to more than 250 ethnic groups, the largest being the Yoruba in the south-west, the Hausa and Fulani in the north, and the Igbo in the south-east.

That mix shows up everywhere — in music from highlife and juju to Afrobeats, in Nollywood, one of the world’s most prolific film industries, and in festivals such as the Durbar, Osun-Osogbo and the New Yam celebrations.

Our languages

What you will hear

English is the official language and is used in business, government and at the conference, so delegates will have no difficulty being understood.

Alongside it, more than 500 languages are spoken. Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo are the three largest, and Nigerian Pidgin serves as a common tongue across regions.

Our food

What to try

Nigerian cooking is bold and regional. Jollof rice is the national favourite, often served with grilled chicken or fish. Suya, spiced skewered beef, is the street food to try after dark.

Look out for egusi soup with pounded yam, moi moi, pepper soup and puff-puff. Dishes can be hot — ask for mild if you prefer, and vegetarian options are widely available.
