About the conference

The XXI International Silage Conference brings silage science to Africa for the first time since the series began in Edinburgh in 1970.

The conference

The premier global platform for silage science

The International Silage Conference is the premier global platform for scientists, technicians, entrepreneurs and policymakers in the silage and livestock industry to exchange knowledge, innovation and technology.

Since 1970 it has been held every two or three years, each time in a different country and on a different continent. The XXI edition runs from 25 to 28 April 2028 at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, Nigeria.

A first for Africa

Why Nigeria, and why now

The XXI International Silage Conference comes to Abuja — the first time the event has been held in Africa since it began in Edinburgh in 1970.

Nigeria is at a pivotal moment in its livestock development, with a new Ministry of Livestock Development and a national focus on feed scarcity and nutrition through better forage conservation. Hosting the conference here puts that work in front of the global silage community, and brings the global community to researchers and producers across the continent.

Since 1970

Fifty years of silage science

The first International Silage Conference was held in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1970 with 35 participants, all from the United Kingdom. The meeting was considered a “Silage Seminar” and focused on discussion of present and future research projects, with no submission of abstracts and no presentation of research papers. Since then the conference has been held every two or three years in different countries and continents.

Looking ahead

The International Silage Science Society

To further promote and advance silage science and technology, and to establish an international platform and network for worldwide exchange on silage research and extension, the Continuation Group of the ISC proposes to establish a formal organisation: the International Silage Science Society.

The proposal follows intensive discussion since the XVIII ISC in Bonn, Germany, and will be put to delegates for agreement at the XXI ISC in Nigeria.
